Step-by-Step – Transfer Clergy

Clergy who come to MCC from other traditions are called ‘Transfer Clergy’ and must meet the requirements for ordination outlined in the MCC Clergy Manual (Click Here to View). The following is a brief overview of the process for transferring one’s credentials to MCC.Step One: MCC Membership
Become a member of a local MCC congregation. Becoming a part of the community and ministry of a local MCC prepares one for the unique calling to minister within this theologically diverse denomination known as the “Human Rights Church.” A minimum of six months of membership at a local MCC is recommended before an endorsement is made to attend the Readiness for Vocational Ministry Retreat (REVM).
Step Two: Attend a Readiness for Vocational Ministry Retreat (REVM)
This three day retreat is the point of entry for all persons who want to be ordained in MCC. During this retreat faculty will meet with you to assess your ministry profile and make specific recommendations about your next steps to become clergy in MCC by creating a Ministry Action Plan (MAP). This is also a time to meet future colleagues in ministry in MCC including other transfer clergy. Psychological testing is required to attend REVM and it is possible that previous testing done by transfer clergy can be accepted. It can take up to three months to complete all required paperwork including testing before registering for REVM. Click here for the REVM In Care Packet which includes all forms and a link to approved psychological testing centers. A letter of good standing must be sent from your denomination as part of the REVM application process.
Step Three: Meet MCC Educational Requirements
At the REVM your educational preparation will be evaluated. Typically transfer clergy who come to MCC have already completed the MDiv degree and one unit of CPE (clinical pastoral education). In addition to these educational requirements all persons who are ordained in MCC must complete MCC Polity, Sexuality Studies and LGBTQ History which are offered as online courses.
Step Four: The Internship
A one year internship in a local MCC with a trained supervising clergy is required for all transfer clergy. This year of internship is critical for getting to know the people and culture of MCC and in understanding the unique opportunities and challenges of being a religious leader and professional clergy in the creatively diverse community that is MCC.
Step Five: Apply for an ordination interview.
Upon completion of steps one through four, download the ordination interview application, complete it and send it in to the Office of Formation and Leadership Development. Download the Application for Ordination here.
