Interim Ministry

The time of pastoral transition begins with the decision that the pastor will be leaving and continues through   the incoming settled pastor’s first year of ministry. The time and movement of the church between those two events can affect the success of the new pastoral relationship and the church for years to come.

The two major sections of this period are

  1. the appointment of either a provisional or intentional interim pastor and the ensuing relationship
  2. the pastoral search process

The Transitional and Interim Ministry Program of the Office of Formation and Leadership Development is the MCC denominational piece created to provide accountability and support to our intentional interim pastors, our provisional pastors, and the churches to which they are assigned. The manual for transitional ministry included on this site provides a step by step format for a successful transitional time. In addition to the manual, there are forms, assessments, evaluations and templates for use by the church and the pastoral leader during the transition period. Also, see our forum area for intentional interims and provisional pastors to post ideas, workshops, group studies, etc. that they have used and found meaningful.
